It is that time of year again where Auburn football, consumes the livelihood of the Auburn faithful. Every fan tuning into the games, hopeful that every snap, play and possession falls on good fortune for the Tigers. With those dreams and hopes of success comes huge expectations. No matter how low or high expectations fan’s may have the game is still played on the field and that is dependent on the snap decision making of 18-22 year old young men in 12 games, perspective is paramount when things are not going the right way. In a season bound to be filled with moments of elation and those of defeat. Regardless of outcome the pressure to perform is unavoidable at a high level and is one of the calling cards of most SEC programs, Auburn is no different and not immune to this kind of pressure. Fans might call upon the advent of new coordinators and a budding star at quarterback as reasons to be excited but fans should be wary of having lofty expectations for Auburn football.
Nonetheless, in comes a new signal-caller has emerged from the fray to lead the offense in the form of Jarett Stidham, beating out returnee Sean White and an upstart Malik Willis. The Baylor transfer looks to spearhead a high-powered, spread attack masterminded by another new addition, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey. Lindsey, previously at Arizona State University, comes back home to the Plains. Where he was a part of Auburn’s 2010 national title win as an offensive analyst.
Malzahn brings back Lindsey who has deep roots in Alabama, a Madison native who attended Bob Jones high school, worked at several Alabama programs at the high school level including under the tutelage of Rush Propst at Hoover and had the head coaching gig at another suburban Birmingham school, Spain Park. Malzahn giving the “keys” to the offense with Lindsey as he did with former offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, means that fans will immediately see the effects of a new direction with play calling and what is generally run of the offensive side of the ball.
The time is now for Auburn football to step up and take the next direction as a program. After a solid showing on Saturday versus Georgia Southern, Auburn looks to improve to 2-0 this weekend with a long trip to returning national champions, Clemson. Auburn will be tested at their first true road game of the year. The tigers will be hopeful to return to the glory days of the past. Although, this is the expectation for every season on The Plains, it is important for fans to realize that these are young men in the throes of competition. Tempers may flare and disappointments will almost certainly abound, but it is paramount for the Auburn Family to always stand up and support the home team as football Saturdays returns to The Plains.
