Family Friday raises fund for hurricane Harvey relief

Friday afternoon music courtesy of student radio station WEGL could be heard blaring from Cater Lawn. Some students relaxed on blankets in the shade; others opted to play a game of cornhole. Many students also conversed with friends over lunch on the lawn.

Family Fridays take place the first Friday of every month and “serve to nurture the Auburn family environment.” said one of the two Family Friday directors Kennedye McGhee. “It’s a really big, fun way to promote the Auburn family.”

Family Friday partners with a different student organization every month. This month’s organization was nascent freshmen leadership program Emerge, but, in light of recent weather disaster hurricane Harvey, Family Friday also partnered with the Auburn Red Cross Club. A corner of Cater was devoted to a table accepting donations for the hurricane Harvey disaster relief effort. Red Cross club members also were stationed on the Haley Concourse collecting donations from students, and many students eagerly took advantage of this opportunity to support the organization’s efforts.

“It’s been great to see people get excited about helping,” said Maddy Hickman, Public Relations Coordinator for the Red Cross Club.

The Red Cross Club’s fundraising efforts proved to be successful .

“I’ve been really pleased with how today has gone,” said Maddy Hickman, Public Relations Coordinator for the Red Cross Club. “A lot of students at Auburn want a chance to help and don’t know how, but this is giving them a tool to do that.”
