A spirit that is not afraid

PREVIEW: 'The Circle' author David Eggers to visit the University for Common Book talk

Dave Eggers, author of this year’s Common Book, is set to speak on the Plains on Sept. 12, 2017.

The 2017-2018 Common Book is the critically-acclaimed dystopian novel “The Circle,” the first fiction novel to be chosen for the One Book One Auburn program.

Eggers will join the public in the Student Center ballroom to speak about the book, as well as life experiences. The event is free and a book signing will follow.

The book has been compared to novels such as “1984” and “Brave New World” and was adapted into a major motion picture earlier this year. Themes presented in “The Circle” are modern in today’s society including social media, technology, privacy in an internet age and more.

The Office of Undergraduate Studies coordinates the Common Book program and is excited to have Eggers visit campus.

“We look forward to hearing his unique perspective on the societal impacts of social media and technology as well as continuing the discussion on campus and in the community over the fall semester,” said Jeff LaMondia, program chair.

The University will host events throughout the 2017-2018 school year that discuss themes covered in the novel.
