A spirit that is not afraid

Brown is the new black

Making its comeback from the 90s, the color brown is a power player in fall fashion this year. Alongside TV shows "Friends" and "Full House," chokers and oversized sweaters, we’re in full swing '90s mode. That being said, color trends from the decade were bound to fight their way back into our wardrobes.

All over the fall 2017 runway shows, brown replaced black as the season’s go-to color. Rather than the cooler tones black brings to a look, brown’s warmer undertones paired nicely with familiar fall colors burnt orange, burgundy, beige, army green and even alone for a monochromatic ensemble. Thus, proving further that there are ways to make the seemingly unapproachable color, less intimidating.

Although there is the argument that what is shown on the runway is more fairytale than feasible, the looks serve as a guide for the rest of the industry.

Duly noted by the iconic rom-com film "The Devil Wears Prada," color like any other trend is derived from the runway. In the movie, Meryl Streep plays the editor-in-chief of an elite fashion magazine and explains the thought behind the color of a basic blue sweater. Besides the scene’s dramatic nature, her argument explains the flow from designer to department store perfectly. From an Oscar de la Renta gown to the works of eight more designers, down to a department store display window and then the clearance bin, color trends do in fact trickle down in the industry.

Here are a few ways to trust the trend from the runway and incorporate the color brown into your own wardrobe this fall.

Coats

Although leather coats have long been go-to for outerwear, the color is breaking boundaries this season. From corduroy to velvet and even lightweight trench coats, the trend was pushed farther for fall 2017. Designers Nicholas K, Coach and Claudia Li seamlessly presented their versions of the brown coat on the runway. Well-known brands such as Free People and Nordstrom have also took part and recently introduced their take on the trend. An original revamped, the brown coat continues to be a safe, yet stylish bet for outerwear this fall.

Dresses

Although brown is often disregarded when it comes to day and evening dresses, designers this year showed how to not only wear the color, but make a statement with it. Mixing shades and textures with knit fabrics and leathers, designer brands Yves Saint Laurent Moschino showed us why we should invest in the color this season. Styled with turtlenecks underneath, sweaters over top or alone, a brown dress is easier to wear than you think. Worth a try in the dressing room and a purchase, a brown dress is a great way to add a new color to your wardrobe.

Pantsuits

Although there is a sort of intimidation factor associated with a pantsuit, let alone a brown one, this look was shown countless times on the runway and in magazines as a trend to try out. With its monochromatic nature, this trend rids the need of pairing the color and allows it to make a statement on its own. Prada and Ulla Johnson showed us the ropes on how to master this look and retail stores like J. Crew and Madewell took interest in the trend. You are sure to look bold in brown when trying out a pantsuit this fall.

Whether it’s a dress, a pantsuit, or a coat, take advantage of the chance to add a new color into the mix of your wardrobe. There is more to brown than just boots.
