2018 Governor candidate comes to Auburn

Scott Dawson, a traveling evangelist and lifelong Alabama resident who has lived in Hoover for the past 20 years, has entered the race for Alabama governor. He visited Auburn last week to meet with a few of his student volunteers.

Dawson hopes to change the track record of our previous governors. “Two of the last three elected governors in the state of Alabama have got mugshots,” said Dawson. “There have only been two governors in the last one hundred years that have served consecutive terms that have not been indicted, impeached or arrested in the state of Alabama.”

Dawson plans to work on the three E’s; ethics, education and economy.

In the past, there have been many ethical issues with candidates running for office and not being willing to release personal information. “I am willing to release my latest physical, my last three years of finances, we could even have private investigators look into our past if we need to,” said Dawson.

“I have spoken in 2,000 junior and senior high schools across the country. There is not anyone in this race that has spent more time in a high school or junior high than me.” Dawson has plans to implement more mentor programs, discipline and leadership development in K-12.

“To me, I think the best thing that could happen for students of that age (college students), is for us to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in our state,” said Dawson about college students.

Dawson noted the fact that the economy is doing well, but still thinks we have room to improve. “I want to recruit industry. I applaud Toyota and Mazda for coming to the state of Alabama, but what I really want is to bring their headquarters here, because if I can get their headquarters here then they aren’t going to leave us.”

The volunteers at the meeting were all members of Auburn University. Cameron Breedlove, an Auburn student and volunteer, said “Scott has been bringing people together to reach a common goal for the past 30 years. He will restore the character and honor back to office that Alabama deserves. I support Scott Dawson through it all, and I am very excited to get to work here at Auburn University."

Breedlove along with another volunteer, Conner Livings, are working hard to bring a polling location to Auburn’s campus. “We are working with member of Auburn SGA, the Lee County Probate Office, and Secretary of State John Merrill’s Office to bring a polling location to the university for the first time,” said Livings. “We believe that adding a polling location will not only encourage more voter turnout, but it will offer a more convenient option for students on election day.”

The statewide preliminary is scheduled for June 5, 2018.

Dawson, a 50-year-old husband and father of two college students, announced his candidacy on the nationally syndicated “Rick and Bubba” radio show. Dawson established the Scott Dawson Evangelistic Association in 1987. Over the years it has become increasing popular across the south with attendance reaching up to 12,000 at his events.  Scott graduated from Ensley High School in 1985, and later earned his degree from Samford University. He received his Master of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School.
