An Auburn alumna is throwing her hat into the ring for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Richard Shelby, R-AL, in 2022. Lynda Blanchard, former U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia under former President Donald Trump, recently announced her candidacy for the position.

A video posted to YouTube by the account Blanchard for Senate on Feb. 18 stated her intention to run. In it, Blanchard described herself as a “Christian, conservative and business builder” and a strong supporter of Trump.

Blanchard was confirmed as the ambassador to Slovenia in August 2019, and resigned from the position following the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021.

According to her website, Blanchard co-founded real estate investment management company B&M Management in 1993 and the 100X Development Foundation in 2004, which looks to “foster creative solutions to eradicate poverty and its negative effects improving the lives of children around the world.”

Blanchard graduated from Auburn University in 1991, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.

Shelby announced on Feb. 8, 2021 that he will not be seeking reelection in 2022. He has represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate since 1987.
