Auburn softball kicked off its fall ball season with wins over both Wallace State Community College and Andrew College on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Jane B. Moore Field.

The Tigers started the afternoon playing Wallace State. The starting lineup was a mix of underclassmen and upperclassmen, with sophomore pitcher Shelby Lowe getting the start for the Tigers.

Senior catcher Aspyn Godwin had a hot start, going 2-for-3 with two home runs. Another hot bat for the game was sophomore outfielder Makayla Packer, who went 3-for-4 with two singles and an inside-the-park home run. Freshman outfielder Kenadie Cooper also had an impressive showing, going 3-for-3 with two singles and a double.

Lowe had a great outing, pitching for four innings without allowing a run and totaling 10 strikeouts. Junior KK Dismukes came on in relief for Lowe, also pitching lights out for the Tigers. She pitched four innings as well while collecting five strikeouts and one unearned run. The Tigers overall looked strong, with a team batting average of .432 and a final score of 7-1 to end the game.

The second game of the day for the Tigers was Andrew College. The underclassmen really had their chance to show and improve their skills in this matchup. The starting lineup for the Tigers only had one player who was not an underclassman, but she also played in the first game as well. The team had an overall average of .538 and a final score of 19-1.

Freshman infielder Rose Roach had an impressive showing at the plate, going 4-5 with four singles and a stolen base. Shortstop Lindsey Garcia went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Freshmen Abbey Smith and Aubrie Lisenby both went 3-for-4 with all three hits being singles.

Smith also added two stolen bases to her stats during the game. Sophomore infielder Sydney Cox also joined in the hitting fun, going 3-for-5 with two singles and a double. Freshmen Jessie Blaine and Bri Ellis stepped up to both get a homer during the game.

Sophomore pitcher Maddie Penta got the start for this game. She pitched four scoreless innings and only allowed one hit during her time in the circle. She went through Andrew College’s lineup the first time without allowing any to reach base.

Senior Samantha Yarbrough came on in relief of Penta.  She went on to pitch three innings, two of them ending with Yarbrough striking out the side. Yarbrough collected seven total strikeouts to end the game.

Auburn will be back with more fall ball games Sunday, Oct. 3, against Gulf Coast State College and Snead State at Jane B. Moore Field. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 2:30 p.m. CST.
