Tigers put on solid show at SEC Swimming and Diving Championships

This week the swim and dive team traveled to Texas A&M for the SEC Championships. Auburn men finished in second place and the women finished in seventh. The meet took place from Wednesday to Saturday. 

Sophomore Nate Stoffle set the new Auburn record in the 100-meter backstroke. His time was 44.89. The previous record, 44.90, was held by Pascal Wollach set in 2009.

Below is a breakdown of all the personal bests (PB), records set and overall finishes for Auburn swimmers over the past four days: 

Wednesday, February 15: 

The men’s team finished the day tied for second and the women were in ninth. 

Overall Finishes: 

- Lexie Mulvihill, Emma Steckiel, Claudia Thamm and Rebekah Hamilton finished sixth overall in the women’s 200-yard free relay

- Logan Tirheimer, Kalle Makinen, Mihalis Deliyiannis and Stoffle finished third overall in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay

- Tirheimer finished seventh overall in the 50-yard free

- Michael Bonson finished sixth overall in the 500-yard freestyle race.  

School Records

- Reid Mikuta moved to seventh overall in Auburn history with a time of 1:43.73 in the 200-meter individual medley 

-  Jacques Rathle moved into eighth overall in Auburn history with a time of 1:44.04 in the 200-meter individual medley 

- Danny Schmidt moved into 10th overall in Auburn history with a time of 1:44.21 in the 200-meter individual medley 

- Tirheimer moved into ninth overall in Auburn history with a time of 19.05 in the 50-meter freestyle. 

- Tirheimer, Makinen, Deliyiannis and Stoffle moved to ninth in Auburn history in the men’s 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:15.94. 

- Mason Mathias moved into second in Auburn history with a 4:13.06 in the 500-meter freestyle.  

- Bonson moved into third in Auburn history with a 4:13.10 in the 500-meter freestyle.

- Mikuta moved to fourth in Auburn history with a 1:42.90 finish in the 200-meter individual medley.

- Hannah Owenby had a PB in 200-meter individual medley with a time of 1:56.98 

Thursday, February 16: 

On this day, the men finished in third and the women in eighth. 

Overall Finishes: 

- Hannah Ownbey finished seventh in the 400-yard individual medley.  

- Meghan Lee finished second in the 100-yard butterfly. 

- Aidan Stoffle finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly. 

- Ryan Husband finished 11th in the 200-yard freestyle. 

- Thamm took first in the C final for the 100-yard butterfly. 

- Diver Conner Pruitt placed fourth. 

School Records

- Lee moved into third overall in Auburn history with a time of 51.28 in the 100-meter butterfly.

- Stoffle moved to seventh in Auburn history with a 45.68 in the 100-meter butterfly. 

- Polina Nevmovenko moved to fifth in Auburn history with a time of 1:44.39 in the 200-meter freestyle. 

- Husband moved to third overall in Auburn history with a time of 1:33.38 in the 200-meter freestyle. 

PB

- Ownbey bested her time in the 400-meter individual medley with 4:09.42. 

- Lee bested her time to 51.01 in the 100-meter butterfly. 

Friday, February 17

On the penultimate day of the championships, the men’s team finished in second and the women finished in seventh. 

Overall Finishes

- Lee finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. 

- Ellie Waldrep finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke.

- Stasya Markarova finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke. 

- Mikuta took third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

- Diver Gretchen Wensuc finished fifth. 

- Nate, Mikuta, Aidan and Makinen finished third with a 3:03.03 men’s 400-yard relay time. 

School Record: 

- Henry Bethel moved to fourth overall in Auburn history with a time of 52.05 in the 100-meter breaststroke.  

- Evan McInerny moved to sixth overall in Auburn history with a 1:42.67 in the 200-meter butterfly.  

- Mason Mathis moved to ninth overall in Auburn history with a time of 1:42.95

- 200-meter butterfly. 

- Nate set the school record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 44.89.

- Schmidt completed the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 1:44.04. 

Saturday, February 18

This was the last day, with the men finishing the competition in second and the women placing seventh.

Overall Finishes:

- Emily Hetzer finished seventh in the 1650 (mile) freestyle. 

- Mathias finished fourth in the mile freestyle. 

- Davis finished eighth in the mile freestyle. 

- Bonson finished 11th in the mile freestyle. 

- Platts finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. 

- Aidan took fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. 

- Nate took seventh in the 200-yard backstroke. 

- Nevmovenko took 10th in the 100-yard freestyle. 

- Owenby and Brynn Curtis tied for 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke. 

- Mikuta finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke. 

- Diver Walker Creedon finished fourth.

- Diver Whit Andrus finished eighth. 

- Nevmovenko, Mulvihill, Hamilton and Platts finished the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay in eighth.

- Tirheimer, Makinen, Husband and A. Stoffle finished the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay in sixth. 

School Records

- Daisy Platts moved into fourth overall in Auburn history with a 1:51.63 in the 200-meter backstroke. 

- Jaques Rathle recorded the 10th-fastest time in Auburn history with 1:55.76 in the 200-meter breaststroke.

- Grant Davis moved to third overall in Auburn history with a time of 14:51.37 in the mile freestyle. 

- Mathias moves to second overall in Auburn history with a time of 14:42.99 in the mile freestyle.

- Polina swam a 48.86 in the 100-meter freestyle. 

The next meet for the Tigers will be the NCAA Last Chance Qualifier. It will last for two days from Feb. 25-Feb. 26. There is no set place or time for this meet.
