The reigning national player of the year Jackson Koivun collected his first weekly honor of the early 2024-25 season as the SEC named him the Golfer of the Week the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
At last week’s season-opening tournament, the Inverness Intercollegiate, Koivun shot 63-65-70 (-9) to cruise to his third career medalist performance. His 14 birdies tied for tops in the 85-man field.
“It’s great to start off the season with an individual win in a tough field,” Koivun said last week at the conclusion of the Inverness Intercollegiate. “It stings a bit to not be able to hold on to the team win, but I know that will motivate us to get back home and go to work.”
For Koivun, the recognition marks his ninth career conference weekly honor. As a freshman, he was awarded Golfer of the Week three times and Freshman of the Week on five occasions. He went on to earn both SEC Freshman and Golfer of the Year at the end of the 2023-24 season.
No. 1 Auburn finished in second place at 2-over in the Intercollegiate, four shots behind No. 6 Virginia who captured the team title. The Tigers return to action later this week at the Valero Texas Collegiate at TPC San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 21 through Monday, Sept. 23.
