The man convicted of killing two former Auburn football players and an Opelika man has asked for a new trial.
Desmonte Leonard’s lawyers filed a motion with the Lee County Circuit Court on Feb. 19, requesting a retrial.
Defense lawyers said the law was not clear when prosecutors told the jury Leonard was not entitled to claim self-defense because he did not have a permit for the pistol he used.
A case decided since the end of Leonard’s trial allows the jury consider self-defense despite not having a carry permit for a gun, according to Leonard’s attorneys.
Leonard’s attorneys also said portions of the jury selection process were flawed.
Leonard is currently serving a life sentence for the 2012 murders.
