After what seems like years of nonstop campaigning, speeches, rallies and visits, the presidential election is finally over.
In the glorious age of Internet hype, everyone's favorite spy is under more scrutiny as well as more excitement than ever.
My friends like to make fun of me for not pretending like football is my life. They question my allegiance to Auburn and accuse me of being an undercover Bammer -- especially when I tell them I don't particularly like going to home games.
Well, Auburn fans, it has been a rough season.Luckily, we managed to follow through with regular homecoming tradition and racked up points, but overall this season has tested the loyalty of every Tiger fan.Now that the season is nearing a close, we should be able to put the long line of losses behind us, celebrate our wins and enjoy our game against Georgia. While that is probably harder for some to do than others, a little liquid courage will help even the most passionate viewer make it through the game. For all those watching the game from home, or with their singles snuck in through cowboy boots, follow these few drinking rules and it won’t matter who scores.· Take a shot if Spirit gets lost/runs into anything· Take a drink when everyone starts a kick off “War Eagle.” Don’t stop until the phrase is finished.· Take a drink every time you’re about to yell at a ref· Shotgun a beer every time you miss Lutzenkirchen· Take a drink every time the TV shows Chizik upset or contemplative· Take a drink every time Georgia scores· Take a drink of water every time we score (just to help offset some of the alcohol)· Take a drink every time we drop the ball· Take a drink every time Georgia intercepts the ball· If we do win, stop drinking, get your sober friend who thought you were ridiculous for drinking your way through the Auburn–Georgia game, and have them drive you to Toomer’s Corner to roll the trees.By the end of the game, you should be forgetting the painful numbers that have stacked up against our family this season.Despite the odds being against us, I’m still hoping for a stone-cold sober pack of Tigers.
As technology like the iPad 2, iPad Mini and various tablets that can hold hundreds of books in a single device become more and more accessible, some may wonder if the age of physical books and newspapers is coming to an end.
For the past year, we've been arguing about some of the dumbest issues to reach national attention since Kim Kardashian's sex tape. We all know the economy is circling the drain and should take precedence, yet we can't seem to stop getting flustered over religious nonsense and civil rights questions that should have been settled years ago. But that is all over, for a little while anyway.
As we are continuing the tipping of our fiesta hats to the exciting 40th anniversary of Title IX, we must first understand the law and all it entails. Previously, I spoke of the impact that Title IX has made for women, but what I forgot to mention was what the law means for men.
When I graduated high school in 2004, George W. Bush was beginning his second term as president and conservative Republican fervor was at an all time high. I didn't really care though. I was too busy pretending to be an adult with my part-time job and studio apartment.
I was truly saddened to read a column written by Robert E. Lee, editor-in-chief, that implied that Medicaid and Welfare have somehow created a "welfare state."
Chin up, Auburn. It’s not all that bad. I think some of you have forgotten how good we’ve had it this semester. Of course I preferred watching the games of our undefeated season, but acting as though this season has had no winning moments is just crazy.Maybe it’s just because I’m a “glass half-full” kind of person, and I have to say I don’t know how any of you are getting through these games without your glass half full, but I just can’t help but see the perks of going 1–7.Here are some great benefits of a losing season that are sure to distract you from whatever disaster is happening on the field.1) Cheaper downtownNo cover charge at 1716 on Saturdays. Does anyone else remember when some bars downtown dared to charge $10 cover during our undefeated season? With each loss, we get closer and closer to the downtown bars paying us to come and drink. Sky, we lost to Vanderbilt. It’s time to extend that great 7–9 p.m. free stamp policy to Saturday nights.2) Pad your resumeSkimpy resume? No worries! After this season, we can all list National Wildlife Federation under volunteer experience with all the work we are doing to save Toomer’s Oaks by not rolling them this year. I knew Auburn was a university rooted in service, but man are we taking things to the next level. Way to go, guys!3) Educational advantagesWhen I convinced my parents to pay tens of thousands of dollars on my college education, my biggest selling point was what a well-rounded experience I would have. And I was right! Poor Bammers; they have no idea what a loss is. I didn’t think it was possible to add to the list of educational experiences Auburn has over Alabama, but then again I should never underestimate Auburn!4) Better hospitalityTry and name somebody who doesn’t like the visiting team when they’ve lost? Not possible. Everybody loves a visiting team who loses. It’s awesome when people come to your campus and lose! What top-notch experiences I have had in both Oxford and Nashville. While a loss to arguably the weakest SEC football teams is tough, the wonderful hospitality we’re treated to is a nice silver lining. I mean just think, if we keep this up people will be paying us to show up!5) Valid excuse to leave earlyThank you, Spirit; no one has been as bold as you. We’re all guilty of leaving earlier and earlier with every added loss. Most of us try to stick it out until at least halftime, but even that is becoming an impossible task. Spirit, you changed all that. At a record zero minutes into the game, Spirit left Jordan-Hare. What a solid argument you’ve made for those of us hoping to leave early, but who are tied down to friends waiting to see a comeback. Who is going to say we have to stay seated freezing in the stands when the spirit of Jordan-Hare was gone before the game even started? So relax, Tigers. We’ll be back on our feet again. In the meantime, use these tips as ways to distract yourself until the season’s over and we can give all our attention to Auburn basketball... Or until I can get back to you on perks for that season too.
Although our football team isn't living up to expectations, students have a responsibility to support their respective programs. However, the athletics staff is also responsible for putting a quality product on the field.
There comes a time when everyone has to question what they believe. For a lot of people, college is the perfect time to re-evaluate their belief structure. So with that in mind, we are going to take a painful look at our allegiance to our current football program.
The debates are over, but did they really accomplish anything?
The "Bible Belt." The phrase evokes so much for me here at Auburn: the First Baptist Church of Opelika; friends' Bible studies; Campus Crusade.
Have you noticed our football team isn't doing so well?
Sometimes, we as a nation forget just how exceptional the United States is, especially in the midst of election season.
We love to root for the underdog; to root for those who stand up against seemingly impossible odds. At The Plainsman, we have a special place in our hearts for anyone who fights for their right to be heard.Since the middle of the 2012 spring semester, employees of Groome Transportation, the company contracted to run Tiger Tranist, have allegedly suffered under unethical and unfair business practices. Drivers have reported wage cuts, lack of proper benefits and unnecessarily long working hours with no overtime.Although Groome has not admitted to the absence of benefits and wage cuts, it did admit to not paying overtime wages. In a Plainsman article published Thursday, June 28, Groome said the cut in overtime is a result of the current economic and business climate. We think not receiving overtime pay, which is against the law in the state of Alabama, is enough reason alone to justify a strike. In fact, we want to encourage the drivers to continue picketing if their demands are not met. Fighting for well-deserved benefits is more important than some college kids finding a ride to school. If the small-scale picketing is not effective, you have our support to move on to an all-out stoppage of work. Make your voices loud and your message clear. Do not stop until you are treated fairly and ethically.\0x1DThe dismal nature of the current economic and business climate does not give any employer the right to treat their employees like they don’t matter. Ridiculous rules and arbitrary policies only demean employees and make employers look cruel. \0x1DThis is a time when we should be helping each other, not sacrificing wages for the sake of profit. We want to extend a pledge of solidarity to the Tiger Transit drivers taking a stand. We admire you and what you are trying to accomplish. You, along with anyone else who refuses to be subject to unfair work practices, embody what makes America a truly free country.Don’t worry about the students. We have your back. We appreciate all the hard work you have done to get us to school and back every day; we appreciate you taking us home when we’ve had a little too much to drink. You are part of the infrastructure that keeps this great university running, and you have earned all our respect. As long as we are students here, we will never take for granted all your hard work and dedication to the students.
\0x1DThe article concerning the apartment complexes on West Longleaf Drive reeked of poor journalism and sensationalism.
The presidential election is less than a month away, which means it's time for the candidates to get serious.
The people who fill the elite office of the presidency are limited to two terms; two terms filled with enacting changes and working diligently to solve the world's problems; two terms and then they are supposed to return to their life before the presidency.
