For the last three months, our lives have been drastically altered by the quarantines, shutdowns, illnesses and deaths caused by the coronavirus. We've spent weeks at a time locked inside and sequestered from the lights and sounds of our public places. Campuses have been deserted, and businesses have been closed. We've been kept apart from our loved ones because the kind of arm-in-arm comfort we rely upon has become dangerous.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit our community quickly and has affected us in many ways. As I write this, we are starting to see encouraging signs and hear about potential roadmaps to bring us back to some sense of normalcy, but, Auburn, it is more crucial than ever that we continue to take precautions and practice social distancing. If we do, we can get back to some variation of life as we knew it before the pandemic.

In many parts of the country, citizens are being asked to stay inside to prevent further spread of COVID-19. This will last for the foreseeable future, and while it helps cut down on those infected by the disease, it still poses a different kind of threat: a threat to mental health.

This month, both Auburn and Opelika residents have overwhelmingly spoken out against a proposed granite quarry that would be located just outside of the Opelika city limit. These citizens demanded the attention of the Lee County Commission, who responded by voting unanimously for drafting a resolution that opposes the construction, in addition to calling for a public hearing from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the department that holds the fate of a community's backyard in its hands.

With Valentine's Day vastly approaching, one may notice a series of couples exchanging kisses and gifts. High-end restaurants are populated with partners proclaiming their love for one another. The aroma of genuine love in the air on Valentine's Day can be quite contagious and can leave a warm impression on the hearts of many, both single and committed. I can say with confidence that Valentine's Day emphasizes a complex emotion that we lack as a society, love.

This past Saturday’s game between the No. 17 Auburn Tigers and the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats was one of the most highly anticipated games in the history of Auburn basketball. With College GameDay coming to Auburn for the first time in the program’s history, the hype surrounding this game reached another level entirely. While the game itself lived up to the hype, the 12-15 hours that some fans experienced before the game did not come close.

In the second decade of the 21st century, there are things we don’t have to worry about any more thanks to technology. Families are no longer decimated by polio and many other diseases that once were instantly fatal are now preventable. Drunk driving should be no different.

For some students, SGA is an afterthought, something that only comes up when you get bombarded on the concourse from campaigns urging you to vote. In actuality, SGA provides students with an opportunity to fundamentally change the university that they attend.
