Students gathered to remember Lauren Burk on Samford lawn yesterday at noon, just after the clock tower chimed the fight song.

The service marked the one-year anniversary of the day Burk died.

"It's hard to believe it's already been a year," SGA President Jacob Watkins said at the memorial.

Dean of Students Johnny Green encouraged students to remember Burk's legacy.

"My hope is what she stood for might be made known to others and make Auburn a better place," he said.

Green said one way Auburn will remember Lauren is through the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment, which will be given to a freshman student in Burk's major of art or pre-graphic design.

"It will be an example of the standards, expectations and spirit Lauren embodied," Green said. "She was a very special young lady."

Panhellenic President Allison O'Brien told students to remember and follow Burk's example of friendship.

"If you're here today, it's because Lauren and what happened to her had some significance to you," O'Brien said.

She said Burk was important to Panhellenic as a member of Delta Gamma sorority,

"It's important not only because she was a sorority member, but also because she was an Auburn student, a member of the Auburn family," O'Brien said.

Four members of AU Singers sang the Alma Mater at the memorial.

Safe Harbor had a table at the service to talk to students about spring break safety,

Delta Gamma also held a memorial service yesterday.

"Lauren has left a lasting impression on all of our members," Delta Gamma President Sandy Crocker said.
