UPC looking to recruit member

By: Laura Vaughn

Responsible for some of the most popular events in Auburn, University Program Council is one of the most recognized groups on campus.

Students wishing to become involved with UPC can apply to be part of the council.

Applications to serve on one of the 11 committees, available on the UPC Web site, are due Friday in Student Center Suite 3130.

A description of positions is also on the site.

"I joined UPC as a freshman because I wanted to get more involved on campus," said Alex Mileshko, director of technical productions for UPC. "My favorite part of UPC is the diversity of my role."

Events remaining for spring include: a tie-dying workshop, a song writing competition, salsa dancing workshop, a stadium showing of "The Dark Knight" and Tiger Nights.

"Diversity of events is made possible by the council and 11 committees that make up UPC," said President Emily Dorman.

UPC will end the semester with Ben Harper and the Relentless Seven April 29.

UPC has brought concerts such as OAR, Ludacris, 311, Dierks Bentley, Corey Smith, Switchfoot and the Beach Boys.

"My favorite event put on by UPC was the Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley concert at the Hutsell track my sophomore year," said Dane Pemberton, a senior in building science. "It was fun to hang out with your friends outside and listen to awesome country music for free."

In addition to great concerts, UPC is responsible for planning and providing a wide variety of other activities.

Cooking competitions and classes, comedians, acrobats, free movie showings, song writing competitions and hip hop workshops are just a few of the events put on by UPC.

"We work hard to meet the desires of the student body by planning diverse events," said Dorman, UPC president.

UPC consists of committees such as Film, Fine Arts, Major Entertainment, Tiger Nights, Speakers and Comedians and Special Projects.

Tiger Nights is one of UPC's most famous events.

It's once a semester and features inflatable games, free food, a main stage concert and carnival-like events. It will be held April 3 at the Student Center at 7 p.m.
