Lady Tigers win 2 of series

Auburn hosted South Carolina last weekend in a three game series that faced several rain delays.

The rain delays forced Saturday's game to begin at 7 p.m. and caused a stacked Sunday with the Tigers playing the Gamecocks in a double header that began at noon.

The Tigers won the first two games of the series and now stand at 25-10, 5-4 in the Southeastern Conference.

The Tigers beat South Carolina 3-2 in Saturday evening's game and 12-4 in the first game of Sunday's double header.

The Gamecocks won the last game of the series Sunday 5-0 with freshman pitcher Audrey Broyles pitching a shutout.

"We showed a lot of fight in the first game, coming back from a couple of deficits," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "We never let them hold a lead for long. Unfortunately, they fought back and won the second game. We just never got anything going in that one."

Anna Thompson pitched for the Tigers Saturday night. She allowed just two hits and had nine strike outs.

"Anna did a good job tonight, especially coming off the long break," Deese said. "She worked out of a couple jams, especially when their big hitters were up."

In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, freshman Amber Harrison hit a two-run home run over the left fence to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The Gamecocks' Jacqueline Wetherbee answered with a two-run home run. This closed the gap to the final score of 3-2.

Sunday the Tigers came out in full force in light pink jerseys in honor of "Strike Out Cancer."

Carmen McInrow, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33, gave an inspirational speech and urged the crowd to "keep on fighting" because over $40,000 was raised this year alone.

Pink replaced the usual orange and blue at Jane B. Moore field as fellow survivors and friends braved the cold to watch McInrow throw the opening pitch.

South Carolina's loss of two in the series brings them to 14-15, 2-13 in the Southeastern Conference.

South Carolina head coach Joyce Compton said of their season, ""It's not where we want to be by any means," she said. "But I think it's a dose of reality for what our conference is all about."

The Tigers will host the number one ranked Florida Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Gators are 32-3, 13-1 in the Southeastern Conference.
