Back to school expenses

College students are faced with numerous expenses. The costs of student living are steadily rising. Many students are looking forward to the first week of school, while others ponder how much money they need to maintain a decent lifestyle.

Adam Payne, an Auburn student, expressed how much getting prepared for a new school year has affected his finances.

"I have experienced the rise in student expenses, such as gas prices, food prices, tuition, and the cost of books," Payne said. "I face the challenge of not having adequate funds to continue my education, as I'm sure others do as well."

Schoolbooks, planners and scantrons that support student's test taking needs are one such expense.

Housing is also an issue for students moving into new apartments. New residents are being charged $50 or more than the residents who are renewing their leases.

Many students are responsible for making payments on their tuition, car note and cell phone bill. Some students also pay for healthcare.

Part time jobs are a good way for students to handle necessary expenses. However, after long hours at work these students commit to midnight study sessions, sometimes causing grades to suffer.

Various expenses are reminders of what still needs to be done to ensure that everyone who wants a good education can afford one.
