A spirit that is not afraid

Experts offer study advice for students

Parents often tell their children, "if you dream it, you can achieve it."

However, there is a little thing called reality, and reality brings a quick reminder that it is never easy.

Nonetheless, success and dreams are attainable with the right attitude and approach, especially when it comes to school.

Every student has his or her own opinion on what that recipe for success is.

"Get to know your professor and make sure you have good time management," says Brent Culver, junior in public relations.

The importance of time management is reiterated by first year mechanical engineering graduate student Kyle Malinowski, who says time management and not being afraid to ask questions are the most important keys to academic success.

Mandy Cauthen, graduate student in landscape architecture, advises students to not miss class and always try and review

notes after class. While all of this is great

advice and definitely worth heeding, Stacey C. Nickson, assistant director of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, offers a few more tips to get this semester headed down the right path.

One of the biggest problems Nickson sees among college students is incompatibility with the school.

"Sometimes a student is incompatible with their school for different rea- sons like the school is too big, too rural or not chal- lenging enough for them," Nickson said. "This is a source of a lot of issues."

While some may think it is too late since people are already attending Auburn and experiencing such feelings, Nickson offers advice as to how to make studying easier, which will in turn make anyone a more successful student.

"Make some type of human connection to your environment," Nickson said. "Everyone needs someone to know their name and to care that they're all right."
