The co-rec soccer and softball intramural teams returned to the intramural fields Monday for the second week of play, The Dragons, also known as "The Real Beta Team," mercy-ruled Team Coker in three innings, 19-4. "Winning by 15 runs was the best part of tonight's game," said Dragon Ben Daniels, sophomore in industrial design. "We really played as a unit; we all came together real well."
The Dragons had a few fraternity brothers out there to support them and cheer them on. "It's just a random night in Auburn, just came out to watch pledge brothers play some softball," said Kirby Turnage, sophomore in finance. "They're doing pretty well, they're racking up the runs." The Dragons scored nine runs in one inning to clinch the mercy rule win.
"It was a stellar game," said Dragon Morris Howard, sophomore in political science. "Phe-nom-i-nal, like Jim Rome does it." The Dragons are made up of sophomores from the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and said they'd like to take on the older Beta team, Team Madison. "We can beat Team Madison any day," Daniels said.
Over on the soccer field, coeds from Hurricane Ditka and Fire battled for the night's bragging rights. Hurricane Ditka shut out Fire 2-0 Tuesday. "We played a good game, the girls really came up for us, ran through a lot of players, helped us out a lot on defense," said Hurrican Ditka team member Brendan Christy, junior in management. "(Goalkeeper) Nicholas De Jesus with a career shutout in his first game and that was really huge for us."
The Fire fought hard against Hurricane Ditka but were unable to post a come back. "I tried to stop the ball from getting down the field, and it hit me in the face and I still failed to receive the ball," said Fire member Mitchell Crumbly, sophomore in radio, television and film. "It didn't hurt at first, but it still hurts a little bit." Matt Burgess of Hurricane Ditka, junior in mechanical engineering, said he felt they were all tired, but the girls made the difference in the game.
"The girls really stepped it up big this game," Burgess said. "They gave us a real presence that was missing last game."
Crumbly said the Fire did better this week than the previous week, but they still have room to improve. Auburn alum, Joey Caradine came to support Hurricane Ditka. "It's pretty exciting," Caradine said. "I was going to do a back flip at halftime, but apparently they don't have a show for that here."
Alex Randall, junior in human development and family studies, said she felt the communication on the field was strong, Randall also enjoyed playing with her sister, Katelynn, a freshman. Hurricane Ditka said the win was a team effort and they are excited for the rest of the intramural season. "Andrew (Warnke) and Matt (Burgess) playing up top, scoring for us," Christy said. "My mom's going to put this on the refrigerator when I get home."
