Death of an Auburn Graduate

Auburn University lost one of its newest graduates over Fourth of July weekend on Lake Martin.

Kevin Jang, a 23-year-old alumnus, dove into the water near the Dadeville area of Lake Martin and did not resurface, according to police.

Jang, born in Opelika in 1987, was raised in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 2005. In May, Jang graduated from Auburn University with a degree in finance.

"As a student, Kevin was extremely bright," said Bruce Sims, a senior in ROTC. "He had a great understanding of business and was the cornerstone of our group."

Jang and Sims were classmates in strategic management during the 2010 spring semester.

"He and I were on the same team for the duration of the class," Sims said.

Sims described Jang as a thoughtful, soft spoken man.

"I can't recall ever seeing him angry, as he was always in a good mood," Sims said.

The loss of his friend and fellow student came as a shock to Sims.

"It was tough to hear of Kevin's passing; my thoughts and prayers go out to his family," Sims said.

Though Sims was sad at the loss of someone he worked so closely with, he remembered the exemplary Auburn student Kevin Jang was.

"Kevin truly was a great guy," Sims said. "He was honest, kind and sincere, and I'm thankful to have known him."
