Board of Trustees meeting approves building designs

A maintenance project to repair the exterior of the Lowder Business Building is expected to begin within four to six months, according to Dan King, assistant vice president for facilities, who briefed the Board of Trustees during a meeting Friday.

The project is scheduled to last approximately one and a half years.

As a result of the Lowder Building being built in sections, water leaks and water intrusion have resulted and caused damage, King said.

The maintenance project will replace the flashing and windows, as well as install insulation, among other things, King said.

"It will be a visible project," King said. "You'll see scaffolding on the exterior of the building. That scaffolding will move around the building as we go through the phases."

Elsewhere on the agenda, the board approved the schematic design of a proposed facility for the Center for Advanced Science, Innovation and Commerce.

The facility has an estimated cost of $28.9 million.

The project will be funded by a National Institute for Standards and Technology grant and matching funds from Auburn.

Auburn's Research Park has been identified as the site for the facility.

The board also approved the program requirements, budget, funding plan, site and schematic design of a pavilion that will complement a new Band Rehearsal Hall facility.

The project will be completed in two phase. The first will consist of the construction of a pavilion adjacent to the Band Practice Field to shelter band members from inclement weather.

The cost of the pavilion is estimated at $800,000 and will be funded by the College of Liberal Arts.

Phase two consists of the construction of the Band Rehearsal Hall facility, which may take several years to complete because funds need to be raised.

Later in the meeting, a moment of silence was held for former College of Sciences and Mathematics Dean Marie Wooten, who died Nov. 5 in a pedestrian accident.

Charles Savrda, professor and chair of geography and geology, has been named the interim dean of COSAM, according to Mike Clardy, director of communications and marketing.

Clardy said the search committee will conduct a national search to find the next COSAM dean.

"It is very early in its stages on a national search for a permanent replacement," Clardy said.

The next scheduled Board of Trustees meeting is Feb. 4 on the 10th floor of the Library Tower on AUM's campus.
