Auburn Equestrian team wins opening match

The No. 2 Auburn Equestrian team won the opening match of the spring season against UT-Martin 12-6 at the McWherter Ag Pavilion Friday.

Auburn's Huntseat riders remain undefeated with a 7-2 win over the Skyhawks.

The Tigers won Huntseat Equitation Over Fences 3-2 and Huntseat Equitation on The Flat 4-0.

In Huntseat Equitation Over Fences, Auburn riders, Dottie Grubb and Anna Schierholz, both seniors, defeated Brittany Kasprack 66-64 and Torie Efird 84-68.

Auburn rider, Coryn Bergenty, a sophomore, defeated Katie Miranda 78-75, and earned the third point for the Tigers.

MVP Maggie McAlary, a junior, led the Tigers with a win over Caroline Cramer 84-76 in Huntseat Equitation On The Flat.

Auburn riders Christina Lin, Grace Socha, and Ali Loprete outrode Kelsy Abell 77-68, Elizabeth Gay 78-71 and Torie Efird 78-74.

Auburn rider, Anna Becker, a sophomore, tied UT-Martin's Kara Bergenty with a score of 76.

"I'm happy with the horse I drew," MVP Maggie McAlary said. "I tried to have a smooth ride, and compete to the best of my ability. It worked out well."

Auburn's Western riders defeated the Skyhawks 5-4, and earned a sweeping 5-0 win in Reining. The team fell in Horsemanship 4-0.

Auburn rider Mary Casey, a senior, earned the horsemanship MVP, and tied UT-Martin's Stephanie Sanders with a score of 73.

"I'm excited to win my first MVP, and to win one before I graduate," Casey said.

Casey said that Friday's meet reminded her of a football game.

"We started out ahead, it was a nail biter in the middle, and then the team pulled ahead," Casey said. "It was exciting the whole time."

MVP Stephanie Rucci led the Auburn reiners to victory on her horse Hombre with a win over Michelle Chullock 70.5-69.5.

Auburn Reiners sophomore Indy Roper, junior Kristin Hansen, junior Jillian Fuller, and senior Paige Monfore outrode Carly Lamb 69-64, Candace Fulcher 65.5-64, Stephanie Sanders 65.5-62, and Hannah Derks 70.5-68.

"The reiners were unbelievable today," Coach Greg Williams said.

MVP Stephanie Rucci said that she wanted to thank everyone on the team.

"The team attitude helped us win reining," Rucci said.

The team rides against SEC rival Georgia February 12 in Bishop, Ga.
