Auburn softball defeats Appalachian State

The Auburn softball team battled through the cold to defeat Appalachian State 6-2 Sunday afternoon in the last game of the Tiger Invitational. This win closed out the Tigers' perfect weekend, and put the team at 5-0 this season.

Appalachian State took a 1-0 lead at the bottom of the second inning, but Auburn quickly tied the score at the top of the third inning. Auburn senior catcher Elizabeth Eisterhold delivered a single to the left that allowed senior Amber Harrison to score and bring the game to 1-1.

The Tigers scored another run when Auburn freshman Hilary Mavromat hit a home run in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Eisterhold delivered a two-run single and brought the score to 4-1. In the fifth inning, Auburn grabbed another run when sophomore Maris Medina delivered a triple to score junior Baylee Stephens.

The Mountaineers hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth bringing the score to 5-2.

The Tigers closed out the game with a home run from Stephens making the final score 6-2. This was Stephen's first career home run.

"We won the games that we were supposed to," said Stephens. "Opening the season you're supposed to get the wins that you can. We have a hard road up ahead."

The undefeated Tigers have proved to be a successful team, but coach Tina Deese said the team has not peaked yet.

"We did what we had to do and what we were supposed to do," Deese said. "We had a good weekend. We have a lot to build on."

This weekend has set a good tone for the Tigers as they look forward to the rest of their season.

"I feel like we've done really well this weekend. It's the first weekend out in the spring and we've just been seeing what everyone has," Eisterhold said.

The Tigers will be hosting the SEC/ACC/Big 12 Challenge next weekend, and Deese said the team could really use the support of the Auburn community.

"You're not going to get a better weekend of softball than next weekend," Deese said. "We've got a lot of quality teams coming in. We've got the Big 12 and the ACC. Come out and support your Tigers."

The Tigers will take on Oklahoma State Friday at 3 p.m. in the first game of the weekend.
