Tigers lead after day one

The Auburn men are in first place after one day of competition at the 2013 Swimming and Diving Championships.

A huge reason for the Tigers' prime position was the 200 meter medley relay team of Kyle Owens, Stuart Ferguson, Marcelo Chierighini and James Disney-May who set the fastest time in the nation this season by swimming at a blistering pace of 1:24.11.

Two Auburn divers advanced to the 1-meter finals as well.

The men have 196 points and a 40 point lead over second place LSU after the first day.

"I thought it was a really strong day," Auburn head coach Brett Hawke said. "We set it up well with diving today, really happy with the way they performed. They gave our swimmers a lot of confidence. It takes the weight off your shoulders when you're going in with a lead before the swimmers even start. Coach Shaffer and the divers did a phenomenal job. We came out in that men's (medley) relay and got a win. All of our splits were good, but we still need to clean up a few details. But overall, men and women performed really well today."

The women currently sit in fifth place with 132 points, and trail first place Tennessee by 53.
