Auburn picks up two runs in the ninth to top UAB

Auburn defeated UAB 6-4 Tuesday evening, March 17, at Regions Field in Birmingham.

Keegan Thompson started at first base and recorded an RBI triple in his first at-bat of the season in the second inning. The sophomore also scored a run in the seventh.

Sophomores Damon Haecker and Blake Logan and junior Melvin Gray led the way for the Tigers as each player recorded two hits on the night.

Auburn starting pitcher Dalton Rentz pitched five straight innings. The junior allowed three hits, no runs, zero walks and struck out a career-high six batters.

Auburn (14-7) stepped it up toward the end after the Blazers scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning and left it tied going into the ninth inning.

Junior Cody Nulph hit an RBI single to right field and Logan hit a sac fly to take a two-run lead over UAB in the top of the ninth.

Redshirt junior Justin Camp worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the save.

The Tigers next matchup will be March 20-22 in a weekend series against Vanderbilt at Plainsman Park.
