Softball kicks off UT series with win

Even without the long ball, the Auburn softball team found a way to win Thursday night, April 2.

With 13 hits, all of which stayed in the park, the Tigers plated 6 runs on their way to a 6-2 victory over No. 11 Tennessee in game one of a three-game series that will go through Saturday.

“We didn’t have a big inning,” said coach Clint Myers. “But we still scored and answered and we kept extending the lead. That’s huge. That’s what good teams do.”

Auburn got the scoring started early, a 2-0 lead off a Haley Fagan single with the bases loaded in the home half of the second inning. Tennessee answered right back in the third though, making it 2-1 after a solo shot from Scarlet McSwain.

Jenna Abbott started her big night in Auburn’s half of the third inning, hitting her first career triple. A base hit by Tiffany Howard brought Abbott the final 90 feet for the score.

“I was so surprised” Abbot said. “I’m really not that fast. I was just excited.”

Abbott finished the night with a career high three hits, one run and one RBI.

“My timing was perfect on both of the pitchers and I just took advantage of it,” Abbot said.

Abbot’s RBI came in the fourth, bringing in Fagan and giving Auburn a 4-1 lead. Tennessee blasted another solo shot in the fifth, which would prove to be their final run of the night.

Emily Carosone got a triple of her own in the fifth, scoring Howard to make it 5-2. Carasone was later brought home on a sacrifice fly by Kasey Cooper for the 6-2 lead.

Rachael Walters struck out the side in the top of the 6th to give the Tigers the win and move their record to 36-4 overall with a 9-1 mark in the SEC.

Lexi Davis (17-1) was the winning pitcher on the night. Her final line was five innings pitched, six hits, two runs, two walks and one strikeout.

“We knew we were going to come out and play Auburn softball,” Abbott said. “We had 13 hits and none of them were homeruns, and that’s awesome for us because we can still put together wins.”

The series will continue with game two Friday, April 3, at 6 p.m.
