Softball advances to SEC Semi-Finals

Auburn has secured its spot to the next phase of the SEC Tournament’s semifinals with its 5-2 win over Missouri.

The defense was on its game today as the Tigers continued to make plays to keep Mizzou off the board, including a sac fly catch from Tiffany Howard in left field in the top of the game as well as Carlee Wallace’s fast throw and on a stealing Missou batter headed for second. Auburn would later make its 29th double play of the season in the fourth, and add to that in the top of the sixth with Howard’s catch at throw to knock two runners off the bases.

After allowing one run to Mizzou, Auburn stepped to the plate and it was Haley Fagan’s home run to center field that tied the Tigers in the bottom of the third. She is sure to remember this play, since her older sister Sami was there to see it as an infielder for Missouri.

It was then Wallace who would break the tie with a single to the right and a bobbled control of the ball to allow Emily Carosone to run home safely. Right after, Morgan Estell nailed a pitch up the middle for a grounder to bring in Branndi Melero for the third point of the game, 3-1.

By the fifth inning, Auburn scored two more runners off of Carosone's and Kasey Cooper’s hits, helping the team, which at that point had scored five straight runs since the third inning.

With this win, Auburn will continue to battle for the SEC Tournament title as they next face the winner of the Georgia/Alabama game Friday, May 8, at 2 p.m.
