Austin Golson, center and transfer from Ole Miss in the summer of 2014, was recently placed on scholarship. Golson has moved into position to take the Tigers' starting job, replacing four-year starter and Rimington Trophy winner Reese Dismukes.
"It's a different world when you're playing center," coach Gus Malzahn said. "It's different than guard and tackle, you have to make all the calls, especially when you go fast."
Malzahn confirmed Golson's scholarship status Monday, July 13, at SEC Media Days.
Malzahn has said the center position is the second-most important position on the field. The size of 6-foot-6-inch Golson raises questions about his flexibility at the position.
Golson played 12 games at right guard for Ole Miss in 2013 and was listed as the starting right tackle heading into spring practices in April 2014. Starting this fall, Golson will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"He had a very good spring," Malzhan said. "He's a very intelligent person. Snaps were very good in the spring. He's a guy we feel like we can count on and he should get better the more fan experience he has."
