John Wilkris Trio wins first place at UPC's Battle of the Bands, Moon Machine wins fan favorite

Auburn UPC hosted the Battle of the Bands competition on Cater Lawn Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.

Students laid out on the lawn after signing in with UPC to watch the competition.

UPC members also offered free refreshments such as chicken fingers, chips and soda.

Prior to the event, participants had to sign up their acts through AUinvolve.

Band after band went on stage to perform a small set of songs of their choosing.

Some bands opted to sing original songs, while others chose to perform covers such as Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and the Weeknd's "I Can't Feel My Face."

Some even performed both a cover and an original song.

Michaela Smalley, audience member and freshman in Spanish-International trade, said she supports events like these because they bring together new talent.

“There’s always something new and different that you’ve never heard and it kind of keeps it interesting and I know I definitely like these events because I love music a lot," Smalley said.

The performances ranged from acoustic tributes to electronic songs to rock anthems.

“I think Battle of the Bands is definitely something that needs to happen every year because it kind of brings people together through music,” Smalley said. "And everyone can share their own style of music with their own band and everyone’s got something different to offer.”

Spectators were able to vote for their favorite bands on twitter by tweeting the name of their favorite act with #BOTB2015, according to Dae Jackson, UPC director.

Elizabeth Spence, UPC special committee member, said she was impressed with the talent this year.

“I think it’s really cool because like we were all just talking about earlier, all of these bands sound like they’re off the radio," Spence said. "They don’t sound like student bands and that’s really neat because there’s so much talent here."

The winner of the competition received a $100 prize for being the "fan favorite."

This year’s fan favorite winner was the band Moon Machine, which UPC announcers described at “trippy rock”.

The first place winner was The John Wilkris Trio, who performed an original song and an acoustic Whitney Houston cover.
