Humans vs Zombies returns to library

The seventh semi-annual game of Humans vs. Zombies will take place in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library on Oct. 30 at 8 p.m.

Humans vs. Zombies is a game of tag between two teams: Humans and Zombies. According to Gage Neal, one of the game's directors, the humans' objective is to go around the library and find certain objects then bring them back to their home base. The zombies' objective is to "wipe out" all the humans, or tag them.

"The humans are characterized by their ability to have nerf guns," Neal, a senior in applied discrete mathematics, said. "And [they] shoot at the zombies. Just like a fun game of tag."

Since the event is happening the day before Halloween, participants are encouraged to come in costume.

"We're actually going to be having a costume contest," Neal said. "We'll probably have the library staff judge that one. And then prizes will be awarded."

Unlike the week-long game, which is usually held in the spring, participants are encouraged to check the Facebook page for updates instead of the "Humans vs. Zombies Source" website, according to Neal.

According to Ivan Phillips-Schmidt, one of the game's directors, because the library game is shorter than the week-long game, humans are marked by whether they have a Nerf blaster or not instead of the placement of their bandana.

There's no cost or preregistration to participate, accoring to Mathew Halvorson, another one of the game's directors and a senior in polymer fiber engineering. Students should bring their Tigercards and be prepared to sign a waiver at the door.

Neal said this is his first year getting to work on the library game.

"It's been pretty similar to how it's gone in years past," Neal said. "It should go just as smoothly as all the other ones have."

Neal, Halvorson and Phillips-Schmidt have been working with the library for more than month to prepare for this event.

"The library is really cooperative," Neal said. "We work really well together."
