The International Student Organization is hosting its 13th annual International Peace Dinner Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center ballroom.
Executive Vice President of the International Student Organization Yatish Kaveti said he believes the event gives students much needed exposure to other cultures.
“I think that personally, people here are not very aware of other cultures,” Kaveti said. “And in my opinion we need to promote more cross-cultural knowledge, especially within the student body.”
The dinner will feature an array of traditional dishes from more than 10 different countries including: India, Korea, Nepal, China, Turkey and Bangladesh.
Kaveti said volunteers from each country help cook and serve the food.
“Food preparation began Monday,” Kaveti said. “You can probably imagine how long it takes to prepare food for over 1,000 people.”
The event requires a minimum donation of $1 and allows guests to sample as many different foods as they wish. The proceeds from donations will benefit the Beat Bama Food Drive that is raising money for the East Alabama Food Bank.
Auburn University Alumni and Auburn University Global are sponsoring the event for the first time. Kaveti hopes that the added sponsors will help to increase awareness of the event.
“The purpose of this event is to merge the community with students for an international experience, and to make them aware of other countries’ teachings,” Kaveti said. “Our sponsors are hoping to make the event as big as possible.”
Students and the community are welcome and tickets can be bought at the door or through the Multi-Cultural Center at Auburn University.
