Soccer drops final home game of season

The Auburn soccer team came up short on senior day Sunday, falling 1-0 in a tough loss against Georgia at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

The Tigers honored their senior class composed of Sophie Simantel, Kala Faulkner and Logan Beal before the start of the match. Since 2012, the seniors have helped Auburn compile a 47-31-9 record that includes an SEC Tournament final appearance in 2012 and two trips to the NCAA Tourament's Second Round.

Closing out a nine-match undefeated streak at home was opposite the Tigers agenda, who had hoped to make it the first regular-season undefeated and untied home stand in program history.

"Obviously, we're disappointed with this result," said head coach Karen Hoppa. "Credit to Georgia. I thought the fought really hard, we just didn't have enough quality in the final third."

Georgia broke the 0-0 tie in the 84th minute off a corner kick knocked just behind the goal line following a bottom crossbar bounce. The loss drops Auburn's overall record to 12-4-0 and 6-4-0 in the SEC.

"We have to lick our wounds on this one," Hoppa said. "We have to be able to bounce back and it is something that our team has been able to do all year. We have to make sure we have momentum going into the SEC Tournament."

The Tigers will complete their regular-season schedule Thursday at Mississippi State with a 7 p.m. first kick. Following the match, Auburn will know their seeding in the SEC Tournament. The match will be televised on SEC Network+.
