City Council approves a severe weather preparedness tax holiday

The City Council took a vote Nov. 3 to determine if a severe weather preparedness tax holiday should be established. In a unanimous vote, they decided yes.

The purpose of the tax holiday, which is to take place from Friday, Feb. 26 to Sunday Feb. 28, will help keep houses stocked up and citizens prepared in case of emergency, said City Manager Charles Duggan.

The state of Alabama started the holiday within the last five years, which began with a back to school tax holiday and that takes place in August.

The weather preparedness tax holiday will help increase safety of families during hurricane season.

"The idea is to encourage people to go out and stock up on emergency supplies," Duggan said.

The tax holiday will include sales on supplies such as portable radios, battery powered radios and two-way radios.
