Native American Heritage Month to kick off in Student Center

The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will host the Native American Heritage Month Opening Event on Wednesday, Nov 4.

The event, which will be held in the Student Center Room 2222/2223 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will have a mini pow-wow featuring various Native American dances and songs to educate the Auburn community.

Allen Sutton, director for the Multicultural Center, said the Medicine Tail Singers, a traveling drum group and dance group, will host the pow wow.

The group is made up of members of different Native American tribes, including the Poarch Band of Creek Indians of Alabama, the United Houma Nation of Lousiana, the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians of Alabama, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

According to Sutton, the Medicine Tail Singers will perform again in the Foy auditorium at 6 p.m., before the key-note speaker, Robert Thrower. Thrower will discuss the contributions and culture of the Native Creek Indians and their impact on present day Alabama.

Thrower is a member of the local Poarch-Creek band of Native Americans here in Alabama, according to Sutton. He is a minister, tribal medicine man, story teller and playwright.

For more information on both events, see the Multicultural Center's website.
