Open forum about plans for the Mell Corridor set for Feb. 24

If you have any thoughts on the Mell Corridor, the Office of the Provost is hosting an open forum Wednesday, Feb. 24, regarding the planning and construction of the Mell Street Corridor. The event, which will take place from 3:30–5 p.m. in 258 Foy Hall, is open to faculty, students and staff.

The Mell Classroom Building is scheduled to be completed by August 2017, which will result in changes for pedestrians, cyclists and transit routes. Representatives from Facilities Management will present their initial proposals for future use of the area after construction has been completed.

Ben Burmester, campus planner, said the event is kicking off the planning process for the Mell Corridor. During the open forum, there will be a presentation to share ideas with the community. Participants will later be able to give their input on the plans.

"There will be a questionnaire that folks will be able to fill out and leave behind so we can capture everyone's thoughts on any proposals that are shared," Burmester said.

Later on, the forum will have breakout sessions, where the group will be split up into smaller groups to allow for further discussion of ideas, according to Burmester.

"We really hope to be able to get the inputs from any of the constituents to understand what's important for anyone on campus," Burmester said. "The main goal of the project is accommodating all of campus, so it’s a tremendous benefit to the project and important piece to the planning process."

Burmester said the biggest reason they're looking at this issue is because the biggest users and drivers are the students, which is why they are hoping for student input.

"To any students that have any thoughts on safety improvements [or] better accommodating student traffic through campus, we'd be very interested," Burmester said.
