According to Shelby Levy, co-owner of ALL IN CrossFit in Auburn, 70 percent of people that require a bone marrow transplant do not have a donor within their family. Two percent of Americans are on the bone marrow registry. Auburn citizens are making personal efforts to increase that amount.
ALL IN CrossFit and CrossFit Black Knight, two CrossFit gyms, are teaming up with Be The Match, a bone marrow registry, to increase awareness and lengthen the list of those ready to donate. The registry drive will be held in Kiesel Park on Mar. 5, from 9–11 a.m.
The main purpose for the drive is to show interested community members how easy it is to be put on the bone marrow registry, Levy said. To be eligible, donors must have their mouth swabbed to identify their blood type, and they must be 44 years old or younger.
Levy said the two CrossFit gyms will be hosting a 2-mile fitness run that will include workout stations to add an element of fun to the day.
"I think every single one of us wants to make a difference in this world, and I can't think of anything greater than saving someone's life," Levy said. "And being a part of the bone marrow registry drive gives you a chance to save someone's life one day."
