A spirit that is not afraid

Kiesel Park hosts Bark in the Park event

Kiesel Park hosted hundreds of furry friends and their human counterparts Saturday, April 2, at Bark in the Park.

The free event reminded pet owners of the responsibilities that go along with pet ownership.

Becky Richardson, director of parks and recreation, said the event encourages owners to do what needs to be done to effectively take care of their animals. According to Richardson, there were many community members selling handmade dog ownership items.

"There are many people that aren't particularly involved with animal care here that have come to just support the community and the cause,"  Richardson said.

Community businesses and vendors set up tables in support of the event, handing out doggie treats and informational packets.

Among the many tables and activities, dog owners could enter their furry friends into competitions. There was a two-way tie between Frank and his pooch Sugar, and Greyson and his pooch Bernadette for the Dog and Owner Look-Alike competition.

For the Ugly Dog Competition, each dog walked with pride, strutting for the panel of judges. Although all of the contestants exhibited interesting appearances, Max the bulldog took first place.

Savannah Bevan, junior in communications, assisted in planning the event. Bevan said the experience she's gained from planning events with Auburn's Parks and Recreation has helped her become successful.

"I did not expect this many people out here, but with the weather being the way it is, it's turned out really well," Bevan said.
