The BraveHearts Center partners with bookstore for 'Trick-or-Treats for Cans'

The BraveHearts Center for Place and Purpose partnered with the Auburn University Bookstore to collect 1411 pounds of non-perishable food items during their "Trick-or-Treat for Cans" event benefitting the Beat 'Bama Food Drive.

Angela Burque, associate clinical professor and social work field coordinator, serves as BraveHearts director and said The BraveHearts Center for Place and Purpose strives to create an inclusive community for persons with disabilities.

“[The Center] works to identify and develop collaborations in the community both on campus and in the local community that provide opportunities for persons with disabilities,” Burque said.

Burque said the Center's first month of operation had been successful.

“[The Center provides a] safe, structured and enriching daily routine for those whose ended once they finished their high school years at the age of 21,” Burque said.

The BraveHearts Center is a health and wellness program focused on inclusion collectively put on by the Auburn University Social Work Program and First Presbyterian Church of Auburn, Burque said.

The program is managed by three university social work faculty members and facilitated by 70 to 80 students and volunteers, Burque said.

“BCPP students, rehabilitation and disability studies interns, practicum students and social work student volunteers walked through campus wearing their Halloween costumes to trick or treat," Burque said.

Burque said students would stop at pre-arranged destinations to collect contributions to the food drive, as well as some candy at certain locations along the walk.
