Lot near downtown Municipal Parking Deck to be resurfaced

A resurfacing project on the Tichenor Lot downtown is set to begin early next year.

Auburn City Council approved a contract with D&J Enterprises Inc., to resurface the lot adjacent to the downtown municipal parking deck at the City Council's meeting Tuesday night.

The council put the project on hold earlier this year while the city considered a development that would put a hotel and new parking deck where the lot is.

After a contentious planning process, the development fell through this past August after the city was unable to come to a final agreement with the developer Blackwater Resources LLC.

Blackwater would have financed the construction and upkeep for the hotel and parking deck, which would have added more than 100 spaces of public parking spaces downtown.

If the plan had passed, the city would have saved more than $10 million on building costs of a deck to replace the existing one, which city officials say will have to be done within the next decade.

The resurfacing project will cost the city $103,000.
