Jerry Greenfield gives students free advice and ice cream

Jerry Greenfield of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream greeted a group of students awaiting his speech with a loud “War Eagle” on Monday Nov. 14 for his first appearance on the Plains.

Sarah Hudson, UPC director of speakers and comedians, helped organize this second of three guest speakers hosted by UPC and said they chose Greenfield for the position.

“[We] want someone to talk who is successful and who will encourage others to go for their passion," Hudson said.

Hudson said Greenfield's speech is a chance for students to hear the perspectives of a successful businessman.

“[He has a] diverse viewpoint from many in Auburn," Hudson said. “He will further educate the students of Auburn and show them how successful they can be.”

The event housed a lecture from Greenfield followed by a Q&A session. The event concluded with an ice cream social where Greenfield was given the opportunity to connect with the Auburn Family.

Greenfield said his message to the audience encompasses many of his personal values that he and middle school friend Bennet “Ben” Cohen have instilled in their company.

“After essentially failing at everything we were trying to do, let’s get together and do something fun and be our own bosses,” Greenfield said. “We did not know anything about ice cream, we always liked to eat and decided upon homemade ice cream."

Throughout his speech, Greenfield said he has come to learn many things during his business ventures.

“It is most important to stand for values and connect deeply with your community on issues that you want to come together and bring about change,” Greenfield said.

Fan-favorite ice cream flavors such as Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Cherry Garcia and Jerry’s "personal favorite" Americone Dream, were available during the ice cream social, where students had the opportunity to take a picture with Greenfield.
