SGA Town Hall sees discussion on Cambridge Hall construction, A-Zone parking changes

Cambridge Residence Hall will undergo a roofing renovation beginning Monday, Nov. 21, closing down the front parking lot to residents.

Kevin Holt, director of campus housing, said the rear parking lot will remain open for the time being, until students return for the spring semester.

The roofing project will continue and the rear parking lot will close. At this time, the front parking lot will be open to residents.

The Student Government Association hosted a town hall meeting in the Student Center addressing changes, advancements and student grievances on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

A panel of six University employees from parking services, campus housing, dining, campus safety and security and risk management and safety were present for previously submitted questions moderated by SGA President Jesse Westerhouse, as well as live questions from the audience.

There were approximately 40 people present for the meeting lasting an hour.

In answering each question, panelists spoke on programs recently put in action, programs still in the planning stages and issues brought forth by students and the possibility of resolve.

Below are the points addressed by each department representative.

Dining, Glenn Loughridge

  • Einstein Bagel Company is proposed to begin business Fall 2017 in Haley Center.
  • Currently working with Auburn's transit system to provide a lunch bus to move students to Village Dining and a dinner bus transporting students to and from the many dining venues.
  • In response to a question addressing dining hours, Loughridge said student feedback is necessary to provide the right service to students at the right time.
  • After the end of the current contract trend, there will be more dining plan options available.

Parking, Don Andre

  • Plans to continue adding bike hubs around Auburn. Proposed hub at the post office on Opelika Road.
  • All of the A-Zone parking spaces previously assigned to 24-hour professor use will be reverted back to previous time assignments, excluding spots behind Tichenor and the Comer parking area.

Housing, Kevin Holt

  • Holt said at this moment, suggestions for improvements are welcomed at this time as summer renovation plans are being discussed.
  • The decision of whether to renovate The Hill or replace The Hill is something being considered, but actions will not be taken for the time being.
  • Holt plans to look at the dysfunctional Tiger Card readers in the student housing laundry facilities.

Security, Susan McCallister

  • Currently no plans in place to add crosswalks around campus.
  • McCallister said security and safety are working to make students aware of date-rape drugs through fliers made by concerned parents.

Risk Management, Christine Eick

  • Working to decrease waste through responsible purchasing on campus.
  • Insurance program for students recently made available.
