Women's Studies Program to host Amelia Jones

On Monday, Feb. 20, the Auburn University Department of Art & Art History and the Women’s Studies Program of Auburn University will be hosting renowned art historian and curator Dr. Amelia Jones.

Dr. Jones will be presenting her lecture titled “Essentialism, Feminism, and Art: Spaces Where Woman Oozes Away.”

Dr. Jones’ work focuses on race, gender and sexuality in art, and she has published numerous books and anthologies including "Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories" in 2016 as well as "Seeing Differently: A History and Theory of Identification and the Visual Arts" in 2012. She is also coeditor of the "Rethinking Art’s Histories" series from Manchester University Press.

In her work, Jones aims to elaborate and contribute to the body of queer, feminist history and theory regarding modern and contemporary Euro-American visual arts.


Dr. Jones is currently the Robert A. Day Professor in Art and Design and Vice Dean of Critical Studies at the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California and in the past taught at institutions such as University of California, Riverside, University of Manchester, and McGill University.

In 2000 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship and more recently was awarded the Distinguished Feminist Award from the College of Art Association.

The lecture will be held in Biggin Hall 005 and is free and open to the public.
