July in the Auburn-Opelika area is full of farmers markets, patriotic celebrations and family-friendly events. Read on for a list of local events to catch this month.
1. 73rd Annual Freedom Celebration: Held at Opelika High School on July 3, the Freedom Celebration is a free event put on by Opelika Parks and Recreation. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m., with hotdogs, hamburgers and popcorn available, while guests listen to live music and participate in family-friendly activities. The firework show will begin at 8:45 p.m.
2. Independence Day Celebration: On July 4, Auburn Parks and Recreation will host a Fourth of July celebration in Duck Samford Park. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature live music from the Dean Dollar Band and DJ OZZ. Food will be available for sale, as well as free giveaways and family-friendly activities. Fireworks will begin around 9 p.m. Guests are encouraged to park at Duck Samford Stadium, Duck Samford Fields 8-10 or Bo Cavin Baseball Fields. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for July 5.
3. City Market: Auburn’s City Market will be held every Saturday until Aug. 29 in Town Creek Park from 8 to 11 a.m. City Market partners with the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department and other vendors to encourage citizens to shop local.
4. The Market at Ag Heritage Park: The Market is an open-air farmers market held every Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., May 21 to Aug. 6, at 580-B S. Donahue Drive. Featuring locally grown fruit, vegetables, jams, baked goods, soaps and more, its goal is to connect local farmers with their community.
5. O Grows Farmers Market: Every Tuesday until Aug. 25, O Grows Farmers Market will be at Courthouse Square in Opelika from 3 to 6 p.m. Selling produce, baked goods and arts and crafts from local vendors, O Grows’ mission is to make fresh food more accessible. O Grows also partners with the Hunger Solutions Institute at Auburn University to offer the Double Up Food Bucks program, which serves to double SNAP dollars for the purchase of fruits and vegetables.
6. Summer Film Series: On July 14 and 28, the Gogue Center will present movies at the recently renovated Bill and Carol Ham Amphitheatre. Food trucks will open at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free, though registration is requested. The movies shown this month are "Miracle" and "Apollo 13."
7. Food Truck Friday: Presented by the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, this month’s Food Truck Friday will be held on July 17. Food trucks, vendors and live entertainment will gather in Courthouse Square from 5 to 10 p.m.
8. Cheers on the Corner: The Auburn Downtown Merchants Association (ADMA) will be hosting the ninth annual Cheers on the Corner on July 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. This sip and stroll event invites attendees to visit over 20 local restaurants, bars and shops offering special food and beverage selections. Tickets, which will go on sale July 6, are $45 in advance and $50 the day of. Guests must be 21 or older.
9. Float in Movies: Families are invited to Samford Pool, located off of Wrights Mill Road, to swim and enjoy movies on July 11 and 25. Admission is $5 per person, and guests are encouraged to bring their own pool floats. Doors will open at 7:45 p.m., and the movies will begin at 8 p.m. The July movies are "National Treasure" and "Rio."
