Choral students to represent Auburn at New York's Lincoln Center

Auburn has sent off 26 students from the University's seven choral ensembles to New York City to perform at the Lincoln Center on May 29.

Students of every year and major will be represented on the trip.

William Powell, professor of music and director of choral activities, will be leading the trip and be conducting Vivaldi's "Gloria."

This will not be Powell's first time as a contributing conductor at Distinguished Concerts International New York. Powell said this year's presentation will be raising funds for the Tyler Clementi Foundation, an anti-bullying foundation.

The students have already performed "Gloria" for local Auburn crowds and are thrilled to be traveling with the piece, the group said.

The piece involves three soloists, chorus and orchestra. On Sunday, all of the ensembles will come together for a large dress rehearsal.

Auburn's contribution to the program is just one-half of the show. Another performance will take place in Carnegie Hall.

The ensemble will be gone a total of five days, four of which will consist of practices and some New York touring.

Alexis Ligon, freshman in music education, said Auburn's chorus will be performing with high schools. She referred to Auburn as their role models.

"I have the amazing job as choral assistant, and I get to work behind-the-scenes," Ligon said.

She said this trip will be her first to New York and she is excited to be going with her school and fellow chorus students.

The ensemble is one of seven groups performing at DCINY and will be gathering for rehearsal with other groups two main times.

Powell said Auburn was selected again after a successful first appearance in the program.

Saturday and Sunday will be the main rehearsal days, but outside of rehearsal blocks, Powell said students will be able to roam the city and "play."

"I haven't been to New York either and I am pretty excited to go," said Eliott Player, freshman in music. "I am also excited to perform in the Lincoln Center with amazing people and Dr. Powell."

Player said he doesn't know what to expect from New York but hopes to see a show and explore the city.
