No. 15 LSU shuts out No. 14 Auburn, sends Tigers to fifth straight loss

No. 14 Auburn’s downward spiral continued Thursday night in Baton Rogue, as the Tigers were shutout in a 4-0 loss to No. 15 LSU. It is the Tigers’ fifth straight loss.

Auburn was held to just five hits as LSU starter Alex Lange fired a 118-pitch complete game shutout. The Tigers had just five at bats with runners in scoring position.

“(Lange) pitched well, give him a lot of credit. And no walks, I thought that was huge,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. “We never really got to him.”

Lange improved to 6-5 on the season as he struck out nine without issuing a walk.

LSU scored all four of its runs in the first two innings, as Auburn starter Andrew Mitchell struggled in his third start of the year.

Mitchell completed just 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on three hits and five walks. He fell to 5-3 on the year.

Gabe Klobosits gave Auburn a critical 5.2 innings out of the Auburn bullpen. He held LSU scoreless for the final six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

“Klobosits saved our bullpen,” Thompson said. “The best outing of the year by far for him. He just put a little pause in his game and stayed out there for the entire ballgame.”

Dylan Ingram finished the night with three hits for Auburn. Jonah Todd and Will Holland were the only other Tigers with a base hit.

“The positive is still having (Keegan) Thompson and (Casey) Mize in the next two starts trying to get a win on the road,” Thompson said.

Auburn fell to 32-19 overall and 14-11 in the SEC, while LSU improved to 33-17 and 16-9.

The two teams will continue their series tomorrow at 7 p.m. CST. Keegan Thompson will be on the mound for Auburn.
