Column: Where to take visitors in Auburn

One of the best parts of college is inviting parents, siblings and other loved ones to show off your new stomping grounds. The first place you take them will obviously be our beautiful campus, where you can show off the nice facilities and impressive stadiums. Showing off your living quarters is a must as well as it gives you the opportunity to present your empty bottle collection above the cabinets and explain the questionable smell as “something maintenance is going to take care of."

We give these tours to show our loved ones what our college experience is like and present what we mean by “This is Auburn."

More importantly, you show them where you eat. This list compiles just a few of the best places to take guests to eat in Auburn that will ensure another visit.

1. Niffer’s Place

This burger joint on Opelika Road is the perfect place to take first time visitors for a simple, yet delicious meal that won’t break the bank, even if the whole family is invited. Niffer’s Place has a large selection of burgers, some representing Auburn with names like “The Gus Bus” and “Big Blue Burger." Niffer’s Place has incredible appetizers like corn nuggets and fried pickle spears that make anyone eating them feel at home.

2. Moe’s Original Barbeque

Located in the heart of downtown Auburn, Moe’s (not to be confused with the Mexican food chain) provides all the staple barbecue dishes like pulled pork and smoked chicken wings in a perfect “college town” environment. The walls have been covered and recovered with generations of Auburn students’ signatures, there’s outdoor seating both in the front and back and an actual tree in the middle of the restaurant that helps it stand out from any old barbecue place. Moe’s Original Barbecue is perfect for visits from old and new friends.

3. Mama Mocha’s Coffee Emporium

This locally owned shop is a coffee lover’s paradise and provides a perfect place to bring your hipster friends from out of town for an authentic espresso creation they will be proud to add to their Instagram feed. However, Mama Mocha’s is a place anyone can enjoy, as comfy couches and reading material from classic works to Marvel comic books are available to everyone who buys a drink. The coffee is great and will impress anyone who hasn’t been.

4. Steel City

Although it’s a Homewood, Alabama native, this pop shop is the place to go for dessert in downtown Auburn because it’s as delicious as it is unique. Everyone I’ve invited to Auburn has been extremely excited when they see the sign, as the popsicles found there can’t be bought anywhere else. Nothing beats taking a walk down Samford lawn while enjoying a cookies and cream Steel City Pop.

5. Toomer’s Drugs

Because this is Auburn.
