Barber struggles down stretch, finishes opening round one-under

Former Auburn golfer and First-Team All-American Blayne Barber began his weekend at the Barbasol Championship with an uneven first round on Thursday.

Barber carded a one-under, 70 in the opening round at Grand National. The former Tiger finished five strokes behind pack leaders Martin Flores and Cameron Tringale.

Barber began the day even through his first three holes, but followed with birdies on four of his next seven holes to pull into a tie for second place at four-under.

However, Barber started to fade as his round wore on, with three bogeys on his final six holes.

“The weather was good today for some low scores,” Barber said. “Greens are perfect, course is in really good shape. I didn’t play great. My long game cost me. I hit in the hazard a few times.

“My putting was good, short game was good, I just didn’t hit in spots to be able to score, so, I had it going for a while and finished poorly.”

Barber will try to rebound from a tough back nine with a Friday afternoon tee time of 1:37 p.m.
