Auburn Professors Receive High Recognition

Auburn professors Prabhakar Clement and Latif Kalin were recently selected as American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Environmental and Water Resources Institute Fellows. The Environmental and Water Resources Institute is one of eight ASCE technical institutes with approximately 26000 members. Each year a group of highly qualified men and women will be presented with an invitation into the prestigious fellowship program, which can only be attained through an election by a review committee based on professional accomplishment. In return, according to asce.org, a fellow will be recognized as, "A leader in the water resources, environmental, engineering, and sciences professions”, so to have not only one but two Auburn professors be presented with this opportunity is a great honor. It’s no surprise that these two men were offered this fellowship considering though their outstanding credentials. Dr. Clement has been a full- time professor here at Auburn in the department of Civil Engineering since 2007. He is also a Harold Vince Groom Jr. Endowed Professor of Environmental Engineering. He attained several higher education degrees throughout his life including a B.S in Physics, a M.S. in Physics, and a PhD. In Civil Engineering. In addition, just last year, Dr. Clement was rewarded the National Ground Water Association’s John Hen Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering. Dr. Kalin also has a very impressive resume- He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering, MSCE in Civil Engineering, and PhD. In Civil Engineering. He currently works as an Associate Professor in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences.

Auburn students are extremely lucky to have two men with such high credentials teaching on campus, and on the flip side, Dr. Clement expressed his gratitude for working in this environment, “… I feel blessed to work at an institution surrounded by great students who work passionately with me to create novel ideas to solve challenging engineering problems.” When asked if he had any advice to provide students who strove to succeed in a career similar to his, Dr. Clement responded with an inspirational thought, “If you want to do well in your field, you need grit, which is a measure of your passion and perseverance. Pick a field that you are passionate about and keep pushing hard, that is the secret to success!”
