Auburn promotes Chad Prewitt to ‘temporary’ assistant men’s basketball coach

Following the arrest and subsequent suspension of associate head coach Chuck Person, head coach Bruce Pearl announced Tuesday that Chad Prewitt has been promoted to assistant coach.

Pearl said the move is temporary, but also acknowledged that “temporary could last awhile” given the program’s current state.

Prewitt spent three seasons as a special assistant to Pearl before he was promoted to Director of Operations in April. He started that position after Pearl’s son Steven was promoted to assistant coach after Chad Dollar left for South Florida.

Pearl said Prewitt will continue to serve as Director of Operations. However, this promotion allows Prewitt to be on the bench during games.

“He can do both. We all multitask. I do a lot of basketball operations stuff,” Pearl said. “The other thing too as far as being an assistant coach right now, our focus is this team. We have no seniors. Our focus is this team. We have a strong focus on the 2019 class as well. There's not a tremendous urgency to have assistants be focused on recruiting. We're starting practice right now so were all in on this.”

Person was arrested last Tuesday and charged with six counts of federal corruption. He will appear in front of the Southern District of New York on Oct. 10.
