A spirit that is not afraid

The cold weather's effects on the spring semester

“Baby, it’s cold outside.” That line is definitely accurate during this time of year.

With every student agreeing that the weather is not as warm as it was a several months ago, the attitude towards the cold weather varies among our student body. With a school that has many students from all over the country, and even the globe, it is natural for everyone to have different aspects on the cold weather. Some people feel reminded of their hometowns when they feel that freezing wind sweep across their face, whereas some people are from a place that has never experienced temperatures remotely close to freezing. Some people have great enjoyment for this weather, and others, well, not so much.

Even though the campus is comprised of many different students with different opinions on the weather, somehow everyone has altered their day-to-day lifestyle to adhere to the weather in just about the same way.

Many students have chosen to eat indoors, instead of the concourse, as they enjoy a warm meal or steaming, hot cup of coffee.

In the afternoons, the campus walkways and lawns are somewhat desolate as compared to the beginning of the fall semester. Many students opt to stay indoors, as that is where the only warmth is to be found during these next couple of months.

The walking pace by students has also changed during this time of year. The casual stroll students had at the beginning of the year, is now a brisk walk to the heated buildings.

If a student does not have an afternoon class, they will most likely be found in their living quarters. This is shown by most students, as many prefer to spend their afternoons in their living quarters bundled up in layers of blankets and the heat on high.

There has definitely been some adjustments made by the students due to the weather, but some things remain the same. Students are still actively involved in their clubs, greek life festivities, and sporting events. Students are still enthusiastic to participate in and organize events, attend socials, and fill the seats at the basketball games, which are of course held in a warm arena. With so much offered to students, it makes it almost impossible to pass up such activities, even in such chilly weather.

The recreational center should not expect any decrease either, but rather a dramatic increase. Many students will be starting their New Year’s resolutions by getting fit and active.

So even though this weather might be frigid for some, students are still able to find a way to make it enjoyable. The weather may have made students adjust on some level, but it doesn’t change the fact that there is still fun to be had on the Auburn campus.
