ISO’s World’s Fair celebrates diversity on Auburn’s campus

The International Student Organization’s World’s Fair was an opportunity for global students to showcase unique aspects of their home countries. For the event, several tables were set up on the Haley Concourse on Tuesday afternoon, decorated with clothing, educational posters, food and crafts.

Participants included Chinese, Indian, Saudi, Muslim, Vietnamese, Bangladesh, African, Latino and Turkish student associations and organizations.

“My favorite item we have here at the Bangladesh table is what Americans would call a comforter. It’s designed by countrywomen and portrays many different things about my culture,” said Animesh Mondal, graduate student in chemical engineering.

The Chinese Student Organization proudly displayed ethnic food and drink such as creamy candy, milk drinks and duck eggs. The African Student Association had various flags draped over their table for others to admire.

“I’ve been here working toward a PhD in Nutrition since 2015. Today I don’t feel homesick because the flag from my country, Uganda, is on campus,” graduate student Joel Tumwebaze said.

Along with showcasing items, international students were also able to share stories with their American peers. American students partaking in the fair were asked to write down their favorite country organization represented at the event.

“I enjoyed visiting the Indian Student Association. It was interesting to meet some of our international students and hear about how they came to Auburn,” said Anna Caitlyn Camp, junior in communications.

ISO helps international students adapt to college life in America. The mission of ISO is to increase multinational knowledge and promote intercultural relationships on Auburn’s campus through events like the World's Fair.
